ALTERNATIVE TO LEATHER AND SYNTHETIC MATERIALS: BALAO TECHNICAL DESIGN
Combining upcycling of sports materials and biotechnological innovation, our sneakers redefine sustainable performance. The upper is made from AppleSkin, a tough, bio-sourced alternative to leather that recycles waste from the agri-food industry to guarantee a low carbon footprint. For healthy comfort, the interior features a corn starch lining, a natural, hypoallergenic material offering optimal breathability. Our choice of materials enables us to offer an ethical shoe, without compromising on durability.
SPORTS WASTE AT YOUR FEET
Sport generates an invisible and critical flow of waste: 300 million balls and 1 billion tires thrown away every year, taking centuries to disappear. In the absence of recycling channels, these materials end up being burnt or buried.
At Balao, we transform this waste into a resource. By collecting balls and tires directly from clubs, we create a sneaker with virtually zero material impact. A 100% circular and 100% European model, where the raw material already exists.
A 4X LESS-POLLUTING SHOE
The sneaker industry produces 24 billion pairs every year, with an average footprint of 30 kg of CO₂ per pair. Animal leather, meanwhile, emits up to 20 times more than its vegetable alternatives.
Balao halves this impact. By repurposing existing waste and favoring AppleSkin, our sneakers emit just 6.4 kg of CO₂. With 100% European logistics and a design thought out for sustainability, we're proving that it's possible to produce less, but better.
ETHICAL PRODUCTION IN PORTUGAL
A sneaker produced in Asia often costs between 5 and 7 €, a price obtained at the expense of human dignity: precarious wages and total opacity.
Balao manufactures its sneakers in Portugal, in family-run workshops where safety and decent wages are the norm. A pair of Balao sneakers costs around 60 € to produce: a fair price for human labor and transparency. A sneaker should never cost the dignity of those who make it.
