AppleSkin: The new leather for a sustainable future

The leather dilemma: Between pollution and oil

Let's face it, when you're looking to wear shoes with style and conscience, you quickly come up against a wall. Animal leather is one of the biggest polluters on the planet (intensive farming, chrome tanning...). And synthetic alternatives? They are often derived from petroleum, another ugly ecological dead end. At Balao, we've looked, we've tested, and we've chosen the third way: transforming waste into high performance.

What is AppleSkin? Technology at the service of fruit

AppleSkin isn't an apple on a shoe for style's sake. It's a technological feat born of an intelligent circular process. How does it work? Waste from the production of industrial fruit juices is recovered in Italy, more specifically in South Tyrol. Peelings, cores, anything that would normally be thrown away, are dried and then transformed into a fine apple powder. This powder is then blended with a plant-based polymer and a cotton base to become a strong, durable fiber.

"We transform food waste into a premium technical material."

Why this choice? Circular, robust and vegan

The choice of AppleSkin is not an "eco-bobo" publicity stunt. It's a strategic decision for a product that makes sense. Here's why:

  • Circular by nature: we use what's already there. There's no need to extract new oil resources or raise livestock. We recover, we valorize, we loop.
  • Radical resistance: Contrary to popular belief, apple fiber is ultra-robust. It has excellent resistance to abrasion and rubbing, even more than some poor-quality leathers.
  • 100% Vegan & Bio-sourced: A texture and feel reminiscent of premium leather, without any animal suffering. Respect for the living, period.
  • Waterproof: AppleSkin's structure is naturally water-repellent. Your feet stay dry in the Belgian rain, and the material doesn't "drink" water like conventional leather.

Quality without toxins: Chrome-free by essence

The traditional leather industry makes massive use of chromium and heavy metals. This is toxic for soils, rivers and the health of the workers who handle it. Choosing AppleSkin removes these hazardous chemicals from the equation. It's a clean material that breathes, lasts and respects those who wear it as much as those who make it in our workshops in Portugal.

Design in the service of material: more than a "green label

At Balao, we don't use apples just to look "green". We use it because it's an excellent material for creating raw, pure and timeless silhouettes. The aesthetics of the tennis court and padel match perfectly with this premium, durable texture. It's design for impact, for a shoe you won't throw away next season.

Conclusion: Wearing Apple is a decision

Wearing a pair of Balao in AppleSkin isn't about following a passing trend. It's a conscious decision to reject an outdated system. It's choosing performance, style and ethics, without compromise. It's the fruit of our resistance to fast-fashion and waste.
